Honda Hybrid-Electric Legacy: 25 Years

Honda is marking 25 years of hybrid-electric sales in North America, a journey that started with the original Honda Insight, the first Honda hybrid-electric vehicle available in Canada. This legacy continues today, with hybrid-electric vehicles being central to the company’s electrification strategy.

In Canada, more than 30% of Honda brand sales are now hybrid-electric vehicles, with the Civic, Accord, and CR-V each featuring the acclaimed two-motor hybrid-electric system.

“Honda has been making hybrid-electric history in Canada for 25 years, it began with the Insight and our electrification journey continues with our core hybrid models, the Civic, CR-V and Accord,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Honda Canada. “Our increasingly popular hybrid models are a strategic part of our long-term electrification strategy, toward our ultimate global goal of carbon neutrality for all our products and corporate activities by 2050.”

HONDA INSIGHT: The First Generation

Built alongside the NSX and S2000 sports cars at Honda’s Takanezawa Plant in Japan, the award-winning, first-generation Honda Insight remains the most fuel-efficient mass-production automobile Honda has ever sold in Canada, boasting fuel economy ratings of 3.8 L/100km in the city and 3.4 L/100km on the highway*.

Honda engineers developed a suite of forward-thinking technologies. This included an all-new Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) hybrid powertrain, the world's smallest, lightest, and most efficient 1.0-litre gasoline automobile engine, a sophisticated aerodynamic design, and a lightweight aluminum body and structure.

Insight's cutting-edge aerodynamics and the incorporation of aluminum for the two-seater's exterior and frame were pivotal in achieving its exceptional fuel efficiency.

This extensive experience, along with many of the same technologies, was applied to the Insight's design to develop a new type of lightweight aluminum structure that offered high body rigidity and advanced safety features at a reduced cost.

HONDA HYBRID-ELECTRICS: Built In Ontario

Current Honda hybrid-electric models are manufactured in Canada and the U.S. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is assembled at three facilities: Honda of Canada Mfg. in Ontario, the East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, and the Indiana Auto Plant.

The Accord Hybrid is produced at the Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio. The Civic Sedan Hybrid is crafted at Honda of Canada Mfg., while the Civic Hatchback Hybrid is assembled at the Indiana Auto Plant.

Associates at Honda Power Unit Operations in Ohio are responsible for building both the two-motor hybrid-electric power unit at the Ohio Transmission Plant and the 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine at the Anna Engine Plant for the Civic, Accord Hybrid, and CR-V Hybrid models.

CARBON NEUTRAL: Honda’s Strategy For Electrification

In alignment with the company's global objective to achieve carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050, Honda envisions that battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles will constitute 100% of its vehicle sales by 2040.

Hybrid-electric vehicles play a crucial role in Honda's electrification strategy, which involves integrating hybrid-electric powertrains into its core models.

In Canada, hybrid-electric versions, powered by the acclaimed fourth-generation Honda two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain, now account for more than 50% of Accord and CR-V sales.

The upcoming 2025 Civic Hybrid models are anticipated to eventually make up about 60% of Civic sales. Cumulative sales of Honda electrified vehicles in North America have surpassed the one million milestone.

Honda launched sales this year of the Honda Prologue, marking the brand's debut in the all-electric SUV market. In late 2025, Honda will commence production of its own electric vehicles, utilizing the newly developed Honda e:Architecture platform, at the Honda EV Hub. This facility will offer the versatility to manufacture petrol, hybrid-electric, and electric vehicles on a single production line.
