2025 North American Car of the Year: Honda Civic Hybrid
2025 North American Car of the Year: Honda Civic Hybrid The new Honda Civic Hybrid, the electrified version of America's favourite compact car, has been awarded the esteemed 2025 North American Car of the Year title. This marks a record-breaking fourth victory for the Honda Civic, which has received more NACOY accolades than any other nameplate in the award's over 30-year history. The victory additionally signifies the second accolade for the 11th-generation Civic and the seventh occasion a Honda vehicle has been awarded the North American Car or Truck of the Year title – with the Honda Civic winning in 2006, 2016, 2022, and 2025, the Honda Ridgeline in 2006 and 2017, and the Honda Accord in 2018. "We are honoured to have leading automotive journalists select the Honda Civic hybrid as the North American Car of the Year," said Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales. "Our fun-to-drive hybrid-electric models are a key part of our Honda electrification strategy, and sales of the new Civic hybrid will ultimately represent about 40% of Civic sales." The North American Car, Utility, and Truck of the Year awards celebrate outstanding achievements in innovation, design, safety features, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, and value. Established in 1994, these awards are determined by a panel of 50 professional automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, representing independent magazines, television, radio, newspapers, and industry websites. 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Positioned at the forefront of the revamped 2025 Honda Civic lineup, the new Civic hybrid, available for the first time as either a sedan or hatchback, merges the fun-to-drive essence of the Civic with Honda's acclaimed two-motor hybrid-electric system. With a combined 200 horsepower and an impressive 232 lb.-ft. of torque, the new Civic Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid stand as the most powerful non-Type R Civics to date. To further enhance the legendary fun-to-drive spirit and class-leading ride comfort of the Civic, the ride and handling dynamics have been fine-tuned with distinctive spring and damper adjustments, along with a specially developed tire for the Civic hybrid. Hybrid-electric trims also boast the highest levels of cabin quietness and ride comfort within the Civic lineup, featuring a comprehensive noise reduction package that includes Active Noise Control on all hybrids and wheel resonators on the Sport Touring. Civic holds the title as Honda's longest-running automotive nameplate and ranks among the top three best-selling passenger cars in America over the past 52 years. Since 1973, Honda has sold over 15 million Civics in North America, with the 11th-generation Civic achieving unprecedented success. By late next year, Honda plans to begin production of its first EVs constructed on the innovative Honda EV platform at the Honda EV Hub.
25 Years of Hybrid-Electric Hondas In North America
Honda Hybrid-Electric Legacy: 25 Years Honda is marking 25 years of hybrid-electric sales in North America, a journey that started with the original Honda Insight, the first Honda hybrid-electric vehicle available in Canada. This legacy continues today, with hybrid-electric vehicles being central to the company’s electrification strategy. In Canada, more than 30% of Honda brand sales are now hybrid-electric vehicles, with the Civic, Accord, and CR-V each featuring the acclaimed two-motor hybrid-electric system. “Honda has been making hybrid-electric history in Canada for 25 years, it began with the Insight and our electrification journey continues with our core hybrid models, the Civic, CR-V and Accord,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Honda Canada. “Our increasingly popular hybrid models are a strategic part of our long-term electrification strategy, toward our ultimate global goal of carbon neutrality for all our products and corporate activities by 2050.” HONDA INSIGHT: The First Generation Built alongside the NSX and S2000 sports cars at Honda’s Takanezawa Plant in Japan, the award-winning, first-generation Honda Insight remains the most fuel-efficient mass-production automobile Honda has ever sold in Canada, boasting fuel economy ratings of 3.8 L/100km in the city and 3.4 L/100km on the highway*. Honda engineers developed a suite of forward-thinking technologies. This included an all-new Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) hybrid powertrain, the world's smallest, lightest, and most efficient 1.0-litre gasoline automobile engine, a sophisticated aerodynamic design, and a lightweight aluminum body and structure. Insight's cutting-edge aerodynamics and the incorporation of aluminum for the two-seater's exterior and frame were pivotal in achieving its exceptional fuel efficiency. This extensive experience, along with many of the same technologies, was applied to the Insight's design to develop a new type of lightweight aluminum structure that offered high body rigidity and advanced safety features at a reduced cost. Alliston Honda Plant To Specialise In Electric Vehicles Honda Canada has announced its intention to establish a comprehensive EV value chain in Canada, with an estimated investment of $15 billion Canadian. This initiative aims to enhance Honda's EV supply infrastructure and capabilities in anticipation of a surge in EV demand in North America. Honda is currently in the initial stages of assessing the necessary steps to construct an innovative and environmentally conscious Honda EV manufacturing facility, along with a dedicated Honda EV battery plant in Alliston, Ontario. Honda plans to commence electric vehicle production in 2028. The EV plant is projected to produce 240,000 EVs annually once it is fully operational. Honda aims not only to maintain the current employment level of 4,200 associates at its two existing manufacturing facilities in Ontario but also to recruit at least 1,000 new associates for the EV and EV battery manufacturing facilities. President and CEO of Honda Canada Jean Marc Leclerc says “Honda of Canada Manufacturing is one of the premier automotive manufacturing facilities in the world and for nearly forty years, our work has been guided by determination, innovation, and a relentless drive to evolve. Today's announcement is a historic investment by a manufacturer in the Canadian auto industry. It proudly honours the highly skilled associates who have earned a global reputation for manufacturing excellence and represents Honda’s recognition of the long-term attractiveness of the Canadian electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem.” The establishment of the new facilities will also generate numerous additional jobs across all sites, particularly in the construction sector. In order to bolster this initiative, Honda is working closely with the Canadian and Ontario governments to foster advancements in low-emissions manufacturing. This collaboration involves leveraging performance-based programs provided by the federal government's recently introduced Investment Tax Credits, as well as provincial incentives, both direct and indirect. Honda’s EV Strategy For North America In pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality for all its products and corporate activities by 2050, Honda has established an objective for BEVs and FCEVs to account for 100% of vehicle sales by 2040. To reach this target, Honda will persist in providing appealing products during this electrified era worldwide, with a focus on its primary market in North America. To achieve this electrification goal in North America, Honda took the initial step by designating its current automobile production facilities in Ohio, USA, as its EV Hub. This includes the revamping of the current plants, a $700 million investment, and the establishment of a joint venture EV battery plant with LG Energy Solution, involving an anticipated investment of $4.4 billion. The Ohio EV hub will act as the cornerstone for upcoming EV and EV battery manufacturing, exchanging knowledge and skills with other Honda facilities in North America. EV production at the Marysville Auto Plant is anticipated to commence in late 2025. As the next phase of this initiative, Honda aims to set up a complete EV value chain in Canada, covering all stages of EV manufacturing, from sourcing raw materials, especially for batteries, to assembling complete EVs. Furthermore, by considering secondary use and battery recycling, Honda aims to achieve low-carbon value creation across the entire battery life cycle. This approach will not only help Honda build a strong and profitable business but also support the transition to a carbon-neutral society.
